Prof. Bo Jin of the AME department in the USC Viterbi School of Engineering has received the 2022 Sandra L. Bouckley Outstanding Young Researcher Award (age 35 or younger). The award was given by the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME), an association committed to advancing manufacturing and developing a skilled workforce. The medal was presented at the SME International Awards Gala held in Detroit, Michigan, on May 15th, 2022. Jin is the faculty advisor of the USC Advanced Composites Design Team, and his research interests focus on design, manufacturing, and characterization of high-performance composites and structures.

Jin worked as a research scientist at the Spanish National Lab IMDEA Materials, and a Composites Engineer at NASTRAN (NASA Structural Analysis). He is the recipient of several awards, including a SAMPE National Leadership Award, a 1st Place of NASTRAN Simulating Reality Contest, several USC teaching and research awards, and several best paper awards in major composites conferences including CAMX and SAMPE. He serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Composites Science, and serves as the session chair and technical committee member at SAMPE/CAMX. Jin has published nearly 60 peer-reviewed journal and conference papers, including a few featured articles in top journals in the composites field.

Jin and his fellow SME OYME awardees have centered their research and management efforts around manufacturing processes, environmental sustainability, additive manufacturing, smart manufacturing, medical device manufacturing, nanomanufacturing, biomedical manufacturing, metalworking fluids, civil and environmental engineering, and advanced materials.

“Our 2022 Outstanding Young Manufacturing Engineers are a diverse group of highly successful young manufacturing practitioners whose careers have already made considerable inroads in manufacturing technologies, operations and processes,” said Robert Willig, SME executive director and CEO. “These young professionals have demonstrated their ability to design, develop and execute new, impactful technologies within academic institutions, research labs and across a variety of industries. They’ll continue to flourish, and we’re eager to see the influence their ongoing contributions will have on manufacturing. We’re proud to recognize their outstanding achievements in academia and industry.”
