The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) has honored Fokion Egolfopoulos, William E. Leonhard Professor of Engineering and Professor of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering, with the 2026 Propellants & Combustion Award, recognizing his significant contributions in studies of flames, including flame theory and fundamental flame property measurements and simulations, especially at engine-relevant conditions. The ceremony took place on on January 12, 2026, at the 2026 AIAA SciTech Forum and Exposition in Orlando, Florida.

Egolfopoulos’ research bridges a critical gap in combustion science by moving beyond traditional studies at near-atmospheric conditions. By providing experimental data on real fuels under extreme temperatures and pressures, foundational insights are gained which are essential for developing the reliable models needed for engine simulations.

“Even being considered for this award is a significant milestone, but receiving it is a profound honor,” said Egolfopoulos. “I find it both inspiring and humbling to join the ranks of the previous honorees. This recognition brings a renewed responsibility to uphold and further elevate the quality of my research.”
