Assad Oberai, Department Chair, Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering
Welcome to the Department of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering at the USC Viterbi School of Engineering.
Engineering is evolving rapidly as advances in artificial intelligence, robotics, and computation become increasingly integrated with physical systems. At AME, our mission is to prepare students to lead this transformation by combining engineering fundamentals with modern data-driven approaches.
Our faculty bring expertise across mechanics, aerospace engineering, robotics, advanced manufacturing, biomedical engineering, and computational science. This breadth creates opportunities for collaboration and innovation, allowing us to address important challenges that span traditional disciplinary boundaries.
For our students, this means an education grounded in mathematics, physics, design, and experimentation, while embracing technologies that are reshaping engineering practice. We believe that a deep understanding of how physical systems work remains essential for developing and applying new AI-enabled tools responsibly and effectively.
Whether you are considering joining our undergraduate or graduate programs, working towards a doctoral degree with one of our faculty, exploring research collaborations, or partnering with us from industry, I invite you to learn more about our department and the work we do together to advance engineering through discovery, innovation and education.
