Following his 2024 appointment as part of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine New Voices Program, Associate Professor Mitul Luhar has taken an active role in workshops and committees.

He has been appointed to the committee for a National Academies consensus study that will produce a revised, expanded, and online version of “On Being a Scientist,” which serves as an introductory guide for graduate students and early-career researchers. Existing content will be updated to align with current best practices, and new material will be added to reflect changes in the current national and international research practices and to address professional conduct that limits or harms research talent and research advancement. You can learn more about the consensus study here.

He will also co-chair a National Academies workshop committee for Rethinking Researcher Assessment and Incentives at U.S. Academic Institutions. This is a joint project between the Strategic Council for Research Excellence and New Voices. The committee will explore new approaches to expand the criteria for which researchers are assessed at U.S. academic institutions beyond traditional outputs such as grants, publications, and citation counts. The workshop will bring together professors, researchers, and administrators to explore effective strategies for implementing these changes at universities across the U.S.
