Design informatics at USC conducts interdisciplinary research by applying computing and information sciences combined with psychological methods to advance the theory and practice of engineering design. As the increasingly complex practice of engineering design transcends human experiences and becomes increasingly dependent on information and data, there is a strong need for new methods and capabilities to guide design and manage and transform data into useful design insights. Design informatics research involves the development of novel methods and algorithms for enhancing designers’ creativities, automating design processes, and designing novel future systems. In addition to design fundamentals, AI-based techniques, including machine and reinforcement learning, and cognitive methods, including mental process modeling and experiment, are the basis for design informatics.
