About
Micro/nano technology is a highly interdisciplinary research area that encompasses theory, fabrication, characterization, and applications of materials and systems with critical dimensions in the micro- and nanometer range.
We live in both a macroscopic and microscopic world. The microscopic world is fascinating because small dimensions can give rise to many unique properties (mechanical, thermal, optical, electrical, etc.) of materials that are different from those at the macroscale. Understanding and controlling matter at the micro- and nanoscale allow us to utilize these unusual properties in engineering systems for a broad range of applications.
We are living in a technological revolution where micro/nano technology is playing an increasingly important role. From producing more powerful microchips to improving vehicle fuel efficiency; from making wearable and implantable sensors to creating next-generation vaccines – micro/nano technology has been the frontier of engineering, creating new possibilities for manufacturing, materials, energy, robotics, and biomedicine.
Micro/nano technology research in AME at USC spans many different areas including micro- and nanofabrication, microelectromechanical systems (MEMS), microscale combustion and power generation, micro/nanoscale dynamics and transport, microrobots, and biomedical devices. These efforts are supported by the state-of-the-art facilities at USC including the Core Nanofabrication Facilities, Core Center of Excellence in Nano Imaging, Center for Advanced Manufacturing, and Michelson Center for Convergent Biosciences.
