Dhruv Patel, a USC Viterbi PhD student advised by Professor Assad Oberai in the Department of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering, has been awarded the very competitive Stephen Timoshenko Distinguished Postdoctoral Fellowship at Stanford University. This fellowship is awarded to “rising stars” in the area of applied mechanics and computational science and engineering, providing the awardee the time and space to develop their interests to become a faculty member in a top-notch academic program. Patel’s dissertation laid the groundwork in describing how data-driven algorithms, which are the mainstay of machine learning and artificial intelligence, may be combined with physics-based algorithms, which are the current workhorses in computational science and engineering.
